Last, learning to listen is learning to be still and quiet. The necessity for this is as true in relationship with the Light as with other persons. I suggest that this stillness and quietness is foremost in allowing the space to receive.

A woman came to the Sage. She had a passionate relationship with her Christ for many years. She said...

I've lived many years close to Christ. I sometimes wonder if there's more to receive. Is there anything else I should expect?"

No. Enjoy the Christ, and what's given, receive, and what's not given, you don't need. When Christ is your All, you have all.

François Fénelon (b. 1651), a late Christian contemplative, in A Guide to True Peace, speaks of inner passivity to the Light. Here, he speaks of being resigned to Presence above all else, above anything one can receive from Presence. When so resigned, we can be at-peace whatever is or is not given to us, for we have received the Beloved Itself.

The soul that is faithful in the exercise of that love and adherence to God already described, is astonished to feel him gradually taking possession of its whole being; and now enjoys a continual sense of that presence which is become, as it were, natural to it. The presence of God diffuses an unusual serenity throughout all our faculties-it calms the mind, and gives sweet repose and quiet, even in the midst of our daily labors: but then we must be resigned to him without reserve.
